Truck Accident Causes
The National Transportation Safety Board issued a report more than a decade ago about driver fatigue, which is completely preventable if a driver gets enough sleep.
Without at least eight hour of continuous sleep after driving for ten hours or being on duty for 15 hours, the NTSB found sleep patterns are disrupted. Trucker fatigue was a contributing factor in 30 to 40 percent of all diesel truck accidents.
Another problem that creates tired truckers is a medical condition known as sleep apnea, which occurs when an airway is blocked during sleep. The sleeper is then forced to partially awaken to begin breathing again resulting in disturbed sleep.
The NTSB lists some other common causes of big-rig accidents:
- Poor Driver Training
- Driver Fatigue (Tiredness)
- Speeding
- Overloaded Trucks
- Oversized Trucks
- Brake Failure
- Poor Driving Conditions
- Driver Inexperience
- Failure To Yield The Right-Of-Way
- Driving Under The Influence of Alcohol Or Drugs
- Aggressive, Dangerous Or Reckless Driving
- Mechanical Failure (Or Improper Maintenance)
- Defective Parts (Such As Defective Steering Or Brakes)
