Head On Collision

A head-on collision occurs when the front of two moving vehicles, ships, trains or planes hit each other. A head-on differs from a rear-end or side collision in that these accidents are exceptionally deadly. According to federal statistics, head-on collisions resulted in 10.1% of U.S. fatal crashes even though they made up only 2% of collisions.

In a perfect world everyone would follow the speed limits, allow enough distance between cars, and stay in their lane. But this is not a perfect world and head-on collisions often occur when a driver leaves his lane and enters the median of the roadway or crosses the centerline and facing oncoming traffic. A head-on crash can also occur when someone enters the wrong-way entry point of a roadway by turning onto an off-ramp or turning into the wrong side of the road.

An experienced Florida car accident attorney will often look at driving under the influence as one of the more common reasons a driver will drift out of his lane and into trouble.

The frontal impact from two vehicles may be partially absorbed by the cars which are design to absorb or accordion in a crash unlike a stationary object such as a tree or concrete barrier.

Depending on the speed of the approaching vehicle, there may be very little time to react, even for the experienced driver. If a road is not well-lighted you may not see an approaching head-on driver until it is too late. Use your bright lights to drive in the dark when you can do so without inconveniencing others, and drive with your lights on during the day to make other cars aware of your presence.

The violent nature of a head-on collision can result in serious head injuries from the initial crash and any subsequent crashes. Neck injuries, cuts from broken glass and broken bones can result from a head on accident. It is very difficult to ever fully recover from a traumatic head or brain injury.

Driving is serious business. Stay in your lane. Be aware of oncoming drivers and how they are driving. Anticipate their movements. Around a blind curve assume someone is over the line and in your lane so stay to the right. In other words drive defensively!

If you must avoid an oncoming vehicle try not to jerk the steering wheel, particularly if you are driving a vehicle such as an SUV with a high center of gravity as that can cause it to roll. Some driving experts say try to keep two wheels on the pavement if you have the room to do so and can still get out of the way of an approaching driver.

If it appears you are going to collide head-on try to drive to the right and side graze the vehicle, avoiding the full frontal impact.
