The "I'm A Star" Foundation
The I’m A Star Foundation empowers youth with knowledge and resources that enable them to transcend barriers to success and unleash their inner greatness. Through “I’m A Star” conferences and events, they bring in speakers, motivators, trainers and difference makers together with one focus:
“To Make Every Child’s Star Shine Brighter.”
This came from the FT-U blog on the meeting last night:
The mission of the program is to "empower teens with the knowledge and resources that will enable them to transcend barriers to success and unleash their inner greatness."
The students developed their projects based on the findings of the Center for Disease Control's Youth Risk Behavior Survey conducted with Duval students in 2009.
About 10 of the students had a practice session with Burney last week.
"I want the students to understand that the true essence of leadership is service," she said. "The other thing is I want the school district to utilize the students' voices. I really want the school district to utilize what the students recommend."
Some of the students' recommendations include creating a text message service for students to report bullying, a coloring book for elementary students to reinforce healthy eating and living habits, having schools host job fairs for parents and stressing that divorced parents should occasionally make an attempt to do things together with their children.
Mel Johnson, a financial adviser with MetLife, volunteered to mentor a team dealing with communicating to adults. Johnson said he was able to see the impact of him being a sounding board for the students.
"Just by virtue of listening to them, that causes them to reach a little deeper and perform better," he said.
Dominique said it's important for adults to hear students' ideas and what they have to say because it makes the solutions that much better.
"You get an upper hand," he said. "Now you not only know what the adults want, you know what the next generation needs and want and how they can learn better what can make this community better for them."
