Jacksonville Byetta® Lawyers
Byetta, generic name Exenatide, was first approved by the FDA in the spring of 2005 as a prescribed medication for type-2 diabetes patients. Byetta is meant to help control blood sugar/glucose levels by mimicking the effects of incretins, which are hormones produced and released by the intestine into the blood in response to food. The initial dose of Byetta is injected under the skin subcutaneously, either in the thigh, abdomen, or upper arm, twice a day and the quantity in one dose can be increased after one month of usage.
Individuals with type-2 diabetes have put their trust, their health, and their lives in the hands of doctors and pharmaceutical manufacturers to help with their serious condition. At first, Byetta seemed like an efficient drug with only common and minor side effects such as nausea, nervousness, stomach discomfort, headache, diarrhea, vomiting, and hypoglycemia.
Reported cases of acute pancreatitis associated with the use of Breytta were seen in 2008 when two patients died and four others were hospitalized as a result of taking the drug. These included severe cases of hemorrhagic pancreatitis in which the pancreas becomes inflamed and bleeds, as well as necrotizing pancreatitis where the inflamed pancreas destroys itself.
These debilitating side effects of Byetta have continued to surface despite the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) urging the companies responsible for making and distributing the defective drug Byetta, Amylin Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lilly, to strengthen warnings of life-altering pancreas problems and include information on the label. At least forty Byetta patients at this time have informed the FDA of some type of pancreatitis they have developed since using the drug.
Is this where it ends? Who is to know at this point whether other serious side effects of Byetta exist but haven't been discovered until it's too late. Anyone who has used Byetta and experienced serious side effects involving any distress in the pancreatic area or elsewhere should seriously think about seeking legal counsel. The reason for this is that under product liability law, manufacturers have an obligation to ensure that their products are safe and are required to at least properly and clearly warn of any hazards that could occur.
Any victim or the family of any victim that is made to endure the pain and suffering associated with a defective prescription drug that causes long-term medical complications, disability, frightening health scares, or even death, can seek recourse through the courts. It is possible that they can seek restitution for their pain and suffering and recover monies lost due to the high financial burdens of medical bills, treatment, loss of wages, or funeral arrangements.
