Pit Bull Attack Leaves Clay County Woman in Serious Condition

News4jax.com reports that a Clay County woman was mauled by six pit bull dogs owned by her son Sunday afternoon, December 18. The 61-year-old woman was riding in a golf cart in the 6000 block of Old Carter Road in Maxville between her land and her son’s when the dogs attacked her legs. A neighbor heard her cries for help and someone shot one of the pit bulls to get if off of the woman. A Clay County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson says the woman is still in danger of losing a leg. The dogs are in the Clay County Animal Care and Control center and they could be put down. Her son says he hadn’t finished building a new pen to house the dogs so they were roaming freely at the time of the attack.

Let’s all pray that this woman makes a speedy and complete recovery both physically and mentally.

There is a great debate about pit bulls and their owners, but we don’t want to get into that here. The owners are known to lay the foundation for a dog’s personality.

But when it comes to insurance, a dog owner should know what they are getting into if they want to own a pit bull, Rottweiler or any dog considered dangerous. Landlords don’t like pit bulls in particular because they increase their liability, no matter if it is fair or accurate. Major home insurance companies have been known to charge more if there is a particular breed of dog present on the premises.

There is also something called canine liability coverage sold throughout the U.S. This covers the dog owner if someone is bitten. Check your homeowner or renter policy to see if it covers dog bites under general liabilities.

If you are bitten by a dog, the dog’s owner is responsible for your injuries. The Florida dog attack injury lawyers at Farah & Farah offer a complimentary consultation on your dog bite case that you can receive by calling (800) 533-3555.

St. Augustine Man Defends Himself and Family from Pit Bull Dog Attack

A frightening story out of St. Augustine saw a man defending himself, his dog, and his young children from three pit bull dogs who were on the loose. The man was walking on Shallow Tail Lane Friday afternoon, November 4, and when he saw the dogs he picked up his four-year-old but couldn’t get to the two-year-old. Sensing the dog might harm his child he tells News4Jax that he kicked one dog and grabbed the other and choked it. The third pit bull chased the family dog back to their home where the father grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed the dog in the back, killing him. The man says the dogs didn’t growl, they just walked up and attacked.

The man had a bloody hand and his dog had to have 30 stitches but is okay. The children were not harmed. Because the owner of the dogs was found, the person agreed to pay the veterinarian bill for the dog. No charges have been filed by the St Johns County Sheriff’s Office.

Fortunately there were no human fatalities that resulted from this dog attack.

Insurance and Dangerous Dogs

Farah & Farah’s Florida dog bite injury attorneys understand that beside the debate between the pro- and anti-pit bull factions, the insurance industry has been known not to cover homes that have pit bulls or any other breed of dog considered “dangerous.”

Other insurance companies have decided to step in and cater their advertising to owners of pit bull, Rottweilers, Chows, Akitas, Malamutes, Siberian Huskies, Wolf-hybrids, German Shepherds, and Dobermans, all considered “dangerous.” This is additional dog liability insurance specifically covering any injuries your dog causes another person or animal.

Do not assume your homeowner’s policy will cover these instances. Look at the fine print and determine if there is a definition for “dangerous dog” and whether yours falls into that category.

“Daddy Quit Crying,” Girl Says To Dad Following Dog Bite

By Eddie Farah on July 10, 2008 - No comments

This could happen to anyone at any time.

Last Saturday over the July 4th holiday, 9-year-old Miranda Miller spent the day at a family friend’s house in Melrose, Florida.

Miranda and the children played during the weekend along with the family’s dog. The dog never showed any sign of aggression until they went inside for the evening.  The kids were coloring on the floor.

Miranda says “One of the pencils rolled away. It was the color I wanted. Then I stood up to go get it, and the dog bit me.”
