A blood-alcohol test will be conducted on the 26-year-old female driver of a Ford Explorer who allegedly ran a red light and collided into a vehicle driven by a 26-year-old woman, killing her at the scene. The accident victim, who was driving a Mercury Marquis, was turning onto Philips Highway in Jacksonville on a green light to travel south around 2 a.m. on Sunday, October 30, when the SUV reportedly slammed into the car’s passenger side, reports the Florida Times-Union. The accident victim’s passenger was taken to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center in critical condition. The woman who allegedly ran the red light in the SUV was also hospitalized. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) says she suffered serious injuries. Charges could be forthcoming, according to News4Jax.com.

The newspaper reports everyone involved in this tragic crash was wearing a seat belt. Our condolences are extended to everyone involved in this preventable auto crash.

Florida Traffic Crash Statistics

Unfortunately, the number of crashes that occur every day in Florida did not decrease substantially from 2009 to 2010. Fatalities did decrease by 4.64%, from 2,444 to 2,563 fatalities.
