No one can figure out why a 42-year-old St. Augustine man was riding his bicycle in the dark and in the rain on U.S. 17 in Putnam County, Florida Friday night.
Thomas Mattox did not have a helmet on and his bike did not have any lights. And he was wearing dark clothing on a night with poor visibility.
That was the scene when 17-year-old Chantel Sloan of Crescent City, Florida first hit Mattox around 10 pm.
The Florida Highway Patrol says then a second driver, 30-year-old Tiffany Jackson of Interlachen, Florida also did not see Mattox when she hit and bike and possibly the man before sliding across the road and landing in a ditch.
Neither woman was injured but Mattox was killed at the scene.
Why he was riding with no visible detection under these conditions will remain a mystery.
