Hundreds of Teens Learn About Drinking And Driving

By Eddie Farah on March 20, 2008 - No comments

Despite the fact that vehicles are designed with new and improved safety features, auto accidents remain the leading cause of death among young adults.

That’s why it was great to see double the number of kids, about 900 in all, gathered Thursday in Jacksonville, Florida at a STUD Rally – Stop Teen Underage Drinking.

It looked more like a party at the Morocco Shrine Auditorium Thursday as high school kids packed the place listening to music and a serious message about the dangers of drinking and driving.

Mistie Merritt was driving drunk when she killed a Jacksonville mother and now she says there isn’t a day that she doesn’t feel overwhelmed with guilt.

She says, ”I can’t sleep without dreaming about it. It’s constantly with me. It’s just a nightmare.”

Merritt will have a lot of time to think about it. She’ll be sentenced in May and could go to jail for up to 12 years.

Her story probably had an impact on at least one among the crowd from 19 area high schools.

If it stops just one drunk driving incident, this STUD gathering will be worth it.

The STUD rally is an annual event, hosted by the Fraternal Order of Police, Longhorn Steakhouse and the Jacksonville Auto Dealers Association and First Coast News.

Farah and Farah is well aware that injuries associated with auto accidents can wreak havoc on the young lives of victims and their family members.
