In about 35 percent of auto accidents, death occurs when there is a rollover. In an SUV, the death rate jumps to 59 percent.
The key to surviving the crash, if you are not ejected, is the strength of the vehicle’s roof.
The Insurance Institute Status report called Roll Over, concludes that roof strength “definitely influences injury risk” and says the federal government has greatly underestimated the number of deaths from a SUV roof crush.

Jacksonville’s road are ranked overall as “good” according to a Washington D.C. based nonprofit group that focuses on transportation.
The organization, TRIP, finds that 9 percent of our roads are mediocre and 4 percent are poor.
Jacksonville’s 74 percent “good” rating was bested by Atlanta at 89 percent.

There is nothing more frightening that thinking that a drunk person may be behind the wheel of the car next to you.
Sunday afternoon, with a pickup truck speeding east on Atlantic Blvd. plenty of motorists must have been frightened when the truck’s driver then lost control of the vehicle, it flew into the air and landed on top of another car.
Police investigating the scene say they retrieved a whiskey bottle from the truck.

No one can figure out why a 42-year-old St. Augustine man was riding his bicycle in the dark and in the rain on U.S. 17 in Putnam County, Florida Friday night.
Thomas Mattox did not have a helmet on and his bike did not have any lights. And he was wearing dark clothing on a night with poor visibility.

It took fire-rescue and the FHP hours to get a tour bus and a car apart after an accident on Interstate 95 in Florida just south of International Golf Parkway in St. Augustine.
Four people in the car ended up at Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine. The 60 occupants on the tour bus were okay, though shaken up. Southbound traffic was held up as one lane was closed backing up motorists for miles.

About 100,000 Fort F-Series 2008 pickup trucks are being recalled because the driver’s seat violates standards for safety.
The company says that a weld that connects a bracket and the driver’s seat could crack in an accident in a small number of vehicles. That violates federal seat back strength guidelines for safety.

Bike Week in Daytona brings motorcyclists from around the country.
Some are weekend Easy Riders, some hard-core bikers and even young professionals take to the road during the 10-day event to watch competitive motorsports at the Daytona Beach International Speedway. They enjoy the feel of the road, local beer gardens, BBQ and some racing as well.
Unfortunately every year we report that many also die on our roads. So far this week we have five deaths to report.

You could say there was a gas station lockdown at two Kingsland truck stops this month.
State inspectors found that motorists were not getting what they paid for at the pumps. They were being shorted in the amount of gasoline and diesel fuel that came from the pump according to state inspectors from the Georgia Department of Agriculture who found the problem.
